Don't listen to your parents you might do something right

want to be blessed?

Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Ephesians 6:2-3

When I was a kid my Dad used to say,"Don't listen to your parents, you might do something right!"

Everyone has a different experience with their
fathers and mothers. Some fathers and mothers give a lot of advice, some give none. Some fathers and mothers are successful by the world's standards, some have failed. fathers and mothers aren't perfect, but God says they all must be honored.

God doesn't ask us to believe everything our
fathers and mothers believe. He simply wants us to honor them. God chose our fathers and mothers for us and put some of them in a position of authority over us for a time. Whether our fathers and mothers were drug addicts or CEO's is not the point of this commandment. fathers and mothers deserve respect simply for being our fathers and mothers. We were born because of them. If we do this simple thing, honor our fathers and mothers, we will be blessed. It's a promise from God. Honoring to me means being thankful for them, trying to help them, forgiving them for any real or imagined offense and loving them as they are. Even if we don't know who they are be thankful for them.

If they are far from us or have passed on we can still practice this commandment by aligning our thinking to match God's expectation of us.

It's a lifelong commandment and it's a commandment written for anyone on earth who was born.
